Seminal gifts range from important material donations to items that provide little direct benefit to females. Promiscuous, female silk corn flies Euxesta eluta expel and consume male ejaculates immediately after mating. The evolution and function of this peculiar behavior are currently unknown. We performed a series of experiments aimed to: determine if females under different dietary regimes derive nutrients or water for survival and/or reproduction from ejaculate consumption, if males suffer a fitness cost from supplying females with ejaculates, and if females prefer to mate and/or are more likely to store sperm from well fed than nutritionally stressed presumably inferior males. Experiments revealed that protein deprived E. eluta females derive nutrients for ovarian development through consumption of ejaculates of protein fed males. No seminal products affecting survival appear to be transferred in the consumed ejaculate. However, ovarian development, in contrast to testes growth, occurs in detriment of longevity. Females preferred to mate with protein fed males, yet sperm retention in spermathecae was extremely rare after a single mating. This finding suggests that females could be exerting post copulatory control. A key question that remained to be addressed for the understanding of this puzzling and promiscuous mating system is what ecological factors or male traits drive females to retain sperm from one or several males in order to achieve and/or maximize fertilization potential. 相似文献

Glucose measurement errors in enzymic starch hydrolysates at high enzyme-glucose weight ratios 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS), o -toluidine, and glucose oxidase methods accurately measured concentrations of standard glucose solutions in the absence of the starch hydrolyzing enzymes Diazyme (amyloglucosidase) and Clarase (α-amylase). In the presence of high enzyme concentrations, particularly at low glucose concentrations, glucose oxidase and o -toluidine somewhat underestimated standard glucose concentrations while DNS overestimated the glucose concentration by 100%. DNS also overestimated glucose in hydrolysates of standard potato starch. Glucose recovery was estimated at almost 200% of that given by glucose oxidase when enzyme starch weight ratios were 9:1 or more. Glucose was underestimated by o -toluidine in starch hydrolysates in the presence of Diazyme at high enzyme-starch weight ratios. DNS similarly overestimated glucose in starch hydrolysates from white spruce ( Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) and some other species, as enzyme-starch weight ratios increased. The o -toluidine and glucose oxidase reactions were more reliable. Overestimation of the DNS reaction was not improved by treating the glucose-enzyme solutions with anion or cation exchange resins or by removing the enzyme prior to measurement. 相似文献

Larvae of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella, contain two morphologically distinct fat bodies. Tan-colored, highly tracheated fat body located posteriorly in the abdomen was the predominant fat body tissue during the early larval instars. White, sheet fat body located more anteriorly became the predominant type during the fifth (last) larval instar and eventually occupied most of the space of the hemocoel. Ultrastructural morphology of tan fat body showed the tissue to be composed of cells containing numerous, large, spherical mitochondria, with only few lipid, glycogen, or protein storage structures. In contrast, white fat body was composed of cells that in later larval stages had organelles typical of storage functions. Both fat bodies produced storage proteins during the late fifth instar, whereas only white fat body accumulated the storage proteins. Tan fat body dispersed and apparently autolyzed in pharate pupae, whereas the white fat body metamorphosed and persisted into the adult stage. These observations indicate that fat body of the Indianmeal moth is functionally and morphologically differentiated along the anterior-posterior axis into two regional subgroups of cells. 相似文献

Green sea urchins were the most abundant food species (62% by weight) in American plaice (all female) collected from an area in eastern Newfoundland where sandy bottom abuts urchin dominated bedrock. Of secondary importance were capelin (12.9% by weight), which were spawning in the area when the samples were obtained. Food consumption is one of the main routes of human exposure to organochlorine pesticide residues (OCPRs). To assess the potential health risks associated with OCPRs contaminants due to freshwater organism consumption, a number of vegetables, prawn, snail, and fish were collected from Khlong 7 (canal), Rangsit agricultural area, Pathum-Thani Province, Thailand. The samples were extracted using a multiresidue extraction method and then analyzed by gas chromatography with microelectron capture detector (μ -ECD). The results show that low concentrations of OCPRs were detected in parts per billion (ppb) levels. Based on a plausible worst-case scenario, the local population could be at risk for cancer due to consumption of fish contaminated by α -, β -HCH, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin, DDD, DDE, and DDT. Likewise, individuals may be at risk from consumption of Lanchester's freshwater prawn Macrobrachium lanchesteri, freshwater snail Filopaludina mertensi, swamp morning-glory Ipomomea aquatica, neptunia Neptunia oleracea, and water lily Nymphaea lotus because these species all contained elevated concentrations of α -, β -HCH, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, and dieldrin. 相似文献

The application of light reflectance for estimating biomass concentration was investigated on oxidative chemostat culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A correlation between light reflectance and dry weight was established for biomass concentrations from 0.5 to 10 g l–1. The light reflectance signal was stable during the course of chemostat culture and proved to be sensitive to slight but fast changes in biomass concentration following shift-up in dilution rate, acetate pulse or during an oscillation. On-line estimated biomass revealed a larger time window of the biological response during spontaneous oscillations and could be used to predict carbohydrate storage. 相似文献
